The guide is considered a ‘must-have’ and described by the editor of the latest edition, Kim Klaka, as the coastal cruising bible for the state.
This 600+ page book has recently been updated and is now available for free download or purchase through the Club. WA Cruising Guide
The guide covers cruising the western Australian coast from Darwin to Eucla and includes Christmas Island and the Coco Islands. The content of more than 600 pages has photos, chartlets and includes information that shared by the sailing community who have cruised this amazing coastline.
The Guide is an initiative of the Fremantle Sailing Club, commenced in 1990 and updated on several occasions over the years. The latest update is version 5.4. The editor advises that this version include many new diagrams and hundreds of new points of information.
Users will find information on weather, passage planning, tides, emergency services, communications, government departments and the marine animals that make these areas their home. It also includes specific pilotage info for anchorages. The info shows places to anchor, advises of dangers, tells of the amount of protection available there, critical tidal details and even contacts in the local area.
This latest 5,4 version has over 150 updates and changes on the previous 5.3 version which was issued 2 years ago – March 2021. Kim Klaka notes that changes made to the Guide primarily come from Guide users reporting their experiences to the editor of the Guide. Anyone is welcome to contribute by advising of any errors they may come across in the Guide and/or by offering new information for inclusion in the next version.
Accessing a Copy of the Guide
The WA Cruising Guide can be easily accessed online via download in either a PDF or in ePub format. This is free. For those that would prefer a hard copy, a fee is required and buyers should contact the Freemantle Sailing Club to arrange.
Once downloaded, make sure to have the PDF handy on the device that will be accompanying you on your boat as you cruise. It’s also wise to have the Bureau of Meteorology app downloaded for live weather updates and/or the WA Deckee app.
Deckee is an app provided by the WA Department of Transport which provides safety information for those using the waterways of Western Australia. It is a free app. It provides location-based data such as speed zones and navigation aids as well as information for a safe time on the waterways.
