As Superboat Championships kick-off, marine finance options for racing and speedboats

While the majority of boat owners in Australia are recreational vessels such as trailer fishing boats, cruisers and family models, there are those that seek more thrills with racing models. As the Superboat Championships for 2023 are about to get underway, Jade Boat Loans updates on the marine finance options for racing models and other speedboats.

While the superboats competing in these offshore championships are very special racing models, there are many buyers in the market for speedboats for general recreational use. The same loan product, the Secured Boat Loan, is suited for many types of boats used for a wide range of water-based activities, as we will explain.

Superboat Championships 2023

The 2023 events for the Offshore Superboat Championships are about to get underway with the first round set for Wyndham Harbour, Victoria over the weekend of February 25-26. The Australian Offshore Powerboat Club, the organisers of the series, have announced the full schedule for the year with spectators in Victoria, NSW and Queensland in for a real treat.

2023 events:-

  • R1 25-26 February, Wyndham Harbour, Victoria
  • R2 18-19 March, Corio Bay Geelong
  • R3 24-25 June, Hervey Bay, Queensland
  • R4 14-15 October, Lake Macquarie, NSW

Each weekend will see three races across four classes with organisers promising a real race village atmosphere with hospitality and entertainment. The premier class is the Class One V8 which for 2023 will have four boats competing.

The V8s are extremely powerful and capable of reaching speeds of up to 220km per hour. For those interested, the motors in many of these boats are built by Maritimo Racing and can develop an eye-watering, mouth-dropping 830hp. Some of the motors are built by those involved with the V8 supercars.

Another class is the Supercar Outboard with 30’ boats with 600hp from twin 300hp outboards on each hull. The club says this is the class of superboats which is most usually seen across the world in championships in NZ and USA.

Two Sports Classes will also be racing and these two – 85 and 65, have the most competitors due to the accessibility by more owners. The class is designed for the production speed boats. For those interested in getting involved, the Club mentions manufacturers such as Cootacraft, Edebcraft and Razorcraft who enter their factory racing teams. Engines are 200, 250 and 300 hp from well-known brands such as Evinrude, Suzuki and Mercury.

While these boats can reach impressive speeds, some of the races do have speed limitations with boats GPS-tracked to ensure those limits are maintained.

Spectators can get great viewing from the shore in many locations and will get the chance to see the boats and competitors when they are onshore. Those interested in getting to know more about this exciting racing class and get more details on following the series can stay across news at the organiser’s website.

Racing and Speedboat Marine Finance

For those interested in competing in a future super boats championship in their own boat, it could be time to discuss the marine finance options. As the organisers pointed out, the largest class is for production boats which are accessible to many boat owners.

Speed boats of course are not purchased just for racing. This category of boats, speed boats, is hugely popular for recreational and racing water skiing, tow sports and general recreational fun and days on the water. Speed boats are also handy as tenders for large motor yachts.

The loan product suited to most new boats to be used for private, recreational boating is our Secured Boat Loan. With this product, the boat forms the security for the finance. For many applicants, no additional security is required.

We source cheaper, fixed interest rates on this type of loan to provide our customers with the assurance that their rate and their finance repayments won’t change with RBA rate rises.

Terms are negotiated to best meet our customer’s requirements. The terms are fixed, which in conjunction with the fixed rates, results in fixed finance repayments.

Insurance is required by lenders with this type of finance product. The use of the boat, eg racing, may be taken into consideration by insurers when quoting policies.

If extra accessories are required to equip the speed boat for the required activity, when these are purchased in conjunction with the boat, our consultants can, with many purchases, include the cost in the loan.

We source and negotiate every marine finance offer individually to suit the boat and the buyer. So speak with us about the specifics of your speed boat purchase to receive a confirmed quote.
