Entries Now Open for 2023 Australian Yachting Championships in SA

The 2023 Australian Yachting Championships will be held in conjunction with the Lincoln Week Regatta in February, hosted by the Port Lincoln Yacht Club. The Notice of Race has been posted, entries are open and those interested are encouraged to get organised and book accommodation, berthing and other aspects of their trip to South Australia.

This is a prestigious event in the yacht racing calendar and is the first time in 20 years that the Australian Yachting Championships have been held in South Australia. The 2021 event was cancelled due to COVID-19 and the 2022 event was held in conjunction with Hamilton Island Race Week.

Event Details

The Australian Yachting Championships and Lincoln Week Regatta will be held on 17 to 23 February 2023. Organisers have set up a website with all the details for those planning to enter or visit as spectators and supporters. Those planning to enter can complete the entry form online.

In order to be eligible for the Championship, entrants also need to be entered in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race as well as the Lincoln Week Regatta. Scores are then combined towards an overall result for the Championship. The event is a 7 race series and includes several divisions.

Divisions in the Regatta include monohulls and double-handed and include IRC, PHS, AMS and ORC; Multihull racing OMR and PHS; Sports boats and trailer yachts PHS or SMS. For the Australian Yachting Championships it is the yachts that enter the IRC and OMR divisions that receive points. One score over the seven races is discarded when calculating the final results. Entrants must have a current rating certificate.

Marina berths will need to be booked for boats coming from other parts of SA and from other states. To assist with accommodating the yachts for this popular regatta, the owners of the berths move their own boats to other marinas for the week. Berthing details are included in the entry form. For those planning to stay aboard their vessel at the marina during the week, shower facilities are available at the marina.

For berthing at other clubs and marinas in Adelaide, refer to the details on the event website. All sailors competing in the event must be members of Australian Sailing and details of all crew provided as part of the entry requirements.

A range of accommodation options are available in Port Lincoln. These include hotels, apartments and tourist park. A range of social events are scheduled in conjunction with the Regatta. Details are yet to be released but last year’s events included a BBQ, welcome drinks night and of course the post-race presentations.

The Port Lincoln Yacht Club has a long and proud association with yacht racing. Opened in 1931, the Club hosted its first Outer Harbour to Port Lincoln race in 1950 to attract yachties in Adelaide to venture around the corner.

For those that like to plan well ahead, Australian Sailing has already announced the host clubs for the Championships for the next few years. Port Lincoln Yacht Club for 2023, then Newcastle Yacht Club (NSW) will host in 2024, Tasmania’s Derwent Sailing Squadron in 2025 and in 2026 it’s back to Queensland with the Southport Yacht Club set to host.
