Get into Boating with Discover Boating
Just in time for the summer boating season, as part of its Discover Boating initiative, the BIA is currently running its annual ‘See You Out There’ campaign. Andrew Fielding, the Association’s CEO, said boating offers something for everyone - paddling, family fishing outings and power boat adventures.
‘See You Out There’ is designed to inspire both new and experienced boaters to make the most of the great waterways in Australia. Showcasing the ways to spend time on the water for recreation, sport, relaxation and just for fun.
Mr Fielding emphasised the accessibility and inclusivity of boating, with ways for all ages, experience levels and budgets to enjoy the water.
With storing or mooring a major consideration for boat owners, the BIA is working with providers of dry stack boat storage facilities in promotion the benefits of these services.
The campaign will be shown across both digital and TV media from November through to mid- February in Tasmania, NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. If you’re already inspired, head to Discover Boating and start planning how you will get into this great recreational activity.
Get into Boating – Issues to Consider
Depending on the type of boating activity and the level of involvement being planned, there are a range of issues for newcomers to consider. To operate powered vessels, a Boating Licence will be required. These are issued through state government maritime authorities.
Most boats will need to be registered. Exceptions are some classes of small sail boats and paddle craft. Trailers for boats also need to be separately registered.
Skippering a vessel, no matter the size, is a major responsibility. Ability is key. Enrolling in a course with an accredited training provider is highly advisable. In addition to knowing how to operate a vessel, weather knowledge is also important. Refer to the Bureau of Meteorology for information, download the app and resources, and ensure you understand the warnings.
The waterways to be enjoyed – inland, riverine, harbours and bays, offshore, can determine the type of boat required and the level of skills required. When buying a boat, there are many options to consider - sail, power, size in length as well as engine capacity. Operational skill level should be a major consideration when starting with your first boat.
Owning a boat involves arranging where to store or moor the vessel when not in use. Options for mooring can include a marina berth or purchasing access to mooring through maritime authorities. Dry storage is available for some vessels.
If buying a trailer boat, you will need a suitable towing vehicle and somewhere to safely park the trailer and boat when not in use. Safety equipment is mandatory with information as to what is required for the type of boat and waterway available at state maritime websites.
A first step to get into sailing, is to head to your local sailing club and enrol in a Learn to Sail program. Australian Sailing provides information on courses, clubs and classes. When you have mastered the skills, some larger yachts may have openings for crew that you can consider.
Get into Boating with Entry Level Boat Loan
Most newcomers to boating will consider a small runabout or trailer boat. Brands like Quintrex, Malibu and Barcrusher offer a range of models. Value can be found by purchasing a boat, motor and trailer package through a marine dealer.
Used boats can be sourced through a range of channels. When buying online, due diligence in online best practice is advised, especially in verifying ownership and the condition of the vessel. When using Jade to secure financing, our brokers will assist with some of these checks, including if the vessel is under finance.
The same type of loans apply for new recreational boats for first time marine finance applicants as with long-term boat owners. The Secured Boat Loan will suit buyers of new models and quality second-hand models. The boat is accepted as collateral, with most borrowers not required to provide extra security. As the boat is used as the loan security, comprehensive marine insurance is required.
To establish your budget based on loan repayments, use our handy Finance Calculator and our current, highly competitive interest rates.
