Celebrate World Boating Day!

World Boating Day is an international event scheduled for 24 May 2025 with activities across the globe for boating enthusiasts and professionals in the industry. In Australia, the event is supported by the Boating Industry Association and the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show will be running activities to mark the day. Many other organisations, companies and clubs in the leisure boat sector will be running events over 19-25 May, offering newcomers and old hands the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate boating.

How will you celebrate? Keep an eye on the event website for what’s happening in your area, get out on the water, consider buying your own boat or upgrading your current vessel.

What is World Boating Day?

This celebration of boating started in 2024 and is a global initiative, non-profit event, coordinated by the Superyacht Life Foundation. Offering an inclusive day to celebrate recreational boating, the event aims to make the marine sector more accessible and engage with both enthusiasts and newcomers.

Globally, more than 40 organisations are expected this year to get involved. Organisations host their own events which include tours of shipyards, open dock days, trials on-water of different vessels and special festivals for the general public. These are hosted by different bodies including marinas, yacht and boat builders, sailing and boating schools and others.

Organisers encourage all types of organisations and companies in the marine and water sport sector to get involved with their own event. As the date coincides with this year’s Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, the show organisers have a schedule of activities planned to mark the day.

For boating enthusiasts travelling in Europe, there are a number of events including at Benetti in Italy and a sailing festival at Marina Cala de Medici, a yacht design workshop at Pulina, an open day hosted by the West Istanbul Marina, and a trainee day at Abeking and Rasmussen in Germany.

Ways to Celebrate World Boating Day

Boat owners in Australia can celebrate this global initiative by getting out on the water and getting involved with any activities being run by their local sailing, boating, waterskiing, or fishing club. Those keen to get a taste of this great recreational activity may consider hiring a boat for a day or a weekend for fishing, jet skiing, or just leisurely cruising. Newcomers should check if a boating licence is required for the boat they are hiring.

A great way to get into boating is to engage with the BIA’s Discover Boating. While the 2024/25 campaign ended in February, there is loads of information at the Discover Boating website. Information covers a wide range of topics including tips for buying a boat, places to go, safety on the water and other valuable tips.

Want to get into boating with your own watercraft?

Owning your own vessel can be a great way to fully enjoy the on-water experience. Watercraft come in many sizes, small and large, power and sail, and at many price points. First-time owners can select a model that suits their level of competency, their budget, their lifestyle, and their own-water activities. New boats are available through dealers and the second-hand market is vast with vessels available through online marketplaces and through dealers. If buying online, always do your due diligence and follow online buying safety protocols and guidelines.

While there are numerous considerations when buying a watercraft, a key issue is mooring and storage. When buying a jet ski, tinnie, trailer boat, keep in mind that you will need a trailer, a vehicle suitable to towing the trailer with the boat, and somewhere to store both trailer and boat when not in use. It can be highly advisable for new trailer boat owners to undertake a towing course. A boating licence is required.

Non-trailerable vessels will need to be moored while not in use. Check the waterways authority for moorings in your preferred location or enquire about a berth at a local marina.

Price will be important to many buyers. But if purchasing with finance, the cost of the loan, especially the repayments, could be key. While the browsing boats, use our Finance Calculator to get quick loan estimates.

New and many good quality second-hand models will be suitable for a Secured Boat Loan. With the watercraft used as the loan collateral, interest rates are highly competitive. Insurance will be required.

If owning a boat yourself seems too large a financial commitment or too large a responsibility, buying a boat in conjunction with others can be a very attractive option. Not all boat owners have the time and opportunity to use their boat as often as they would like. A boat share arrangement can provide a workable and less expensive alternative to sole ownership for many individuals.

Options include buying with friends or family or buying into a boat-sharing arrangement. Boat share options are available through companies at different costs and with varying terms and conditions. We provide finance options for share arrangements with Unsecured Personal Loans as the watercraft would not generally be available to offer as the loan collateral.

There are plenty of affordable options and opportunities to get into boating with your own vessel. Decide which vessel is right for you and speak with us about finance which is right for you.
