Upcoming Sailing Events

Sailing is a very popular form of boating and a wide range of sailing regattas and races are conducted across the world for many different types of yachts. There are a number of big events coming up on Sydney Harbour so we update you on the details plus provide info on how you can get into sailing yourself.

Sail GP Sydney: Next Level Boating

One of the world’s most exciting boating events is returning to Sydney Harbour and is a not to be missed event. The second season of the international Sail GP series is underway and the next event is scheduled for Sydney on 17-18 December 2021. A great opportunity for both water-based and land-based spectators to take in this thrilling sport which takes boating to the next level.

The series comprises events run in different global locations with each event covering 2 days of racing. As major boating enthusiasts, Jade Boat Loans has the Sail GP Sydney event marked in the diary and we update you on the boats, what the event entails and how you can take in spectacle.

The series includes 10 teams representing their country racing in one design boats. The team line-up is Australia, USA, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, France and Switzerland. The Australian team is headed by Tom Slingsby who has sailed on an American’s Cup winner and was champion of the first season of Sail GP. The crew composition in numbers varies depending on the wind conditions. Get to know the Australian crew

The F50 boats sailed in this event are something else. Cutting edge designed, foiling, wingsailed catamarans with all teams competing in the one design craft. These high performance with foils constructed from higher modulus carbon fibre craft require skill and precision from the elite athlete crews.

The course layout will be dependent on the location and the wind conditions on the day. Races are started with the fleet on the move and from there it is pure exhilaration to watch. The Sydney event will be staged on Sydney Harbour with White Bay the base for the crews.

Organisers have tickets available to watch the event from a hospitality hub at Shark Island with more details available at Sail GP Tickets. For boat owners wanting to watch from their own vessels, race start time is 4pm on each day and course details can be found at the event website.

There will be many great vantage points around Sydney Harbour but this promises to be an amazing and rare event, so secure your spot early.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

Just a week after Sail GP, the iconic Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race will get underway from Sydney Harbour. After organisers sadly had to cancel last year’s event due to COVID restrictions, sailors and the general public will be eagerly anticipating this year’s event.

112 boats are entered to compete in this year’s race across multiple categories. But the focus is traditionally on the race for line honours amongst the super maxis which this year include Ichi Ban, Scallywag and Black Jack.

The race starts from the eastern side of Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day with shore-based vantage points on the northern and southern shores and down the coast after the boats exit the Harbour, turn right and head to Hobart. Tasmanians can get a great view as the competitors as they enter the Derwent River and approach the finishing line. A procession which takes several days before all complete the race.

For all the details on the race stay up to date at the event website.

If you’re thinking of taking your boat out on the Harbour to watch the start, areas are restricted so check in with Waterways  for details.
